MALE, April 13, 2010 (HNS) – Vice President Dr Waheed Hassan Manik has criticised President Mohamed Nasheed and
his government, saying he is working for the administration “not that satisfied.”
Satisfaction
must come with every job to avoid stress, he said, speaking to VTV’s ‘Hoonu Gondi’ (Hot Seat).
“At whatever job, government or private company, [one] should remain satisfied and happy. If that
satisfaction and happiness is not there, [one] will face huge stresses. I am working for this government not that satisfied,”
Vice President said.
Waheed publicly criticised President Nasheed for the first time, saying he
did not deserve “Father of Democracy” honour.
The administration is not utilising
him fully, he claimed, but added he cannot say he did not stand a chance to fulfil the Vice Presidential duties.
He also claimed the administration was running “same as before” despite having a Vice President
for the first time in the country’s history.
“This is the first time we are running
an executive branch with a President and a Vice President. [But] I believe our works are still being carried out same as before.
That is, running everything in a manner that only one person is presiding,” he added.
“So
the function of a Vice President and the role of a Vice President is not being defined, [or] clarified to a fully satisfactory
level.”
Vice President stressed the government is run by “a single party” (MDP),
despite a coalition campaign with agreement to set-up a coalition government. The administration is not in dialogue with his
Gaumee Ithihad or any other party, he added.
“I believe this government is not functioning
as a coalition government, but as a regime administered by a single party. I have to say this because there is no dialogue
among the parties [in the coalition]. Surely, there are no discussions between my party and MDP,” he continued.
He further noted that the lack of discussions between MDP and its coalition partners was one of the reasons
for the resignation of former Home Minister Qasim Ibrahim of Jumhooree Party and former Special Advisor to the President Hassan
Saeed of Qaumee Party.
After discussions with President Nasheed, some things have reformed, while
others have seen no improvement, Waheed said.
