After 22 days in office, Home Minister Gasim Ibrahim has resigned following an admission to the press on Tuesday that he had ordered police to go to One and Only Reethirah Resort subsequent to a request made but the management of the One and only Reethi Rah tourist resort to remove the 13 staff who had been dismissed. Gasim also stated that he felt constitutionally “obliged” to send police because he had been informed that the workers were “a danger to guests, employees and buildings".

Gasim also admitted that Police commissioner Ahmed Faseeh, was reluctant to take police action regarding the matter but that he was grateful to the police for ‘carrying out their duty’.However he added that that he was not responsible for ordering either the number of police or specifying that riot gear should be worn. The resignation came a day after, a press briefing by Gasim where he stated that the riot police didn’t even use batons nor carry pepper spray to the resort, whereas the employees of reethi Rah have alleged use of electric batons and irritant spray from up to 50 police who arrived on the island in full riot early on Sunday morning.

In this briefing Gasim had also accused the press release made by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives following the confrontation between police and the protesting resort employees of being ‘one-side’.

Responding to this comment HRCM had issued another press release this morning stating that their statement was based upon credible evidences which include photographs and videos obtained during their investigation of the matter and that they stand by their statement in condemning the actions of the police.

Following Gasim’s resignation the future of the coalition remains threatened.

Prominent politician and newly established political party Gaumee Party’s Leader Dr. Hassan Saeed has tendered his resignation as Adviser to President Mohamed Nasheed. The former Attorney General Dr. Hassan Saeed who resigned from former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s cabinet blaming Gayoom’s government and his reform program as a failure, has said he was resigning from President Nasheed’s Government because appropriate atmosphere and system is not available for him to offer his advice to the President. ”I have done my best to win the election for the President in the second round. I have also done my best to make President Naseed’s Government a success. I have given my sincere advice to him on several matters without any remuneration" Dar Hassan has written in his letter to the President.

The young lawyer politician further wrote in the letter “Appropriate arrangements have not been made for me to provide my advice as Your Excellency’s Adviser. As a result, there are increasing occasions where I have to give advice on issues where decisions have been made contrary to my advice. These decisions have implications on the national interest and relate to major economic, social, constitutional and legal matters. Because of this Your Excellency and I have to face various difficulties. In view of these reasons, I have with effect from today tendered my resignation from the post of Your Excellency’s Adviser"

Dr. Hassan has appeared in the Maldivian political landscape during the past five years with his reform ideals and became a popular politician which led him to run in the first multi-party Presidential election in October 2008. Hassan came third in the first round of the election, and then he joined with the President’s MDP Alliance with whose support President Nasheed won the second round of the historic presidential election on 28 October.

Jumhoory Party and its partners of former Finance Minister and billionaire Gasim Ibrahim also joined the MDP Alliance after Gasim lost the first round. President Nasheed appointed Gasim to the powerful post of Home Minister, but in just 16 days after the appointment, Gasim resigned from the post saying MDP and Government officials are obstructing his constitutional duty as minister. Gasim also blamed President Nasheed has not been true to the conditions of the Alliance which brought Nasheed to power ending President Gayoom’s 30 year rule.

Dr. Hassan Saeed’s alliance with MDP Government also has gained two prominent posts in the Government. They are Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed and Communication Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel. Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed is presently accompanying President Nasheed in his official visit to Italy. There is no news how these two Ministers would react to their leader’s decision. Both these Ministers resigned from former President Gayoom’s Government with Dr. Hassan Saeed to start their new political partnership which has now become the country’s newest political party the Gaumee Party. Gaumee Party is fielding 20 candidates in the Parliamentary elections to be held in May this year.

President Mohamed Nasheed on 18th Monday, May 2009, sacked his Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed. The President’s Office cited Article 115(f) and 137(a) of the Constitution for the dismissal.

In a letter sent to Dhiyana Saeed, President Nasheed expressed gratitude for services rendered during her tenure as Attorney General.

The President further appointed Minister of Finance and Treasury, Ali Hashim as the Acting Attorney General.

Dhiyana’s relationship with the president has been on shaky ground since a series of damning letters relating to his activities were published on the attorney general’s site in April. In the letters published she has alleged that political appointees abused their powers with specific intent to influence the parliamentary elections held on 9 May. She also criticized the president for his failure to appoint a permanent home minister following Republican Party leader Qasim Ibrahim’s resignation in December 2008. She further published a copy of her appeal to Supreme Court to rule on whether the creation of seven provinces and seven corresponding councils, part of the government’s decentralization process, was unconstitutional.

In an interview given to Miadhu Daily, just hours after her dismissal, Dhiyana said despite her dismissal she was very satisfied with the way and manner she was able to discharge her duties and responsibilities. She said she left office yesterday as a contented person knowing that she had discharged her duties well.

“I joined Attorney General’s office as a State Attorney, after which I held the position of Executive Director and today as I leave office I have held the position of Attorney General, I am happy because I know that I have fulfilled my duties and responsibilities as per the constitution and in the best interests of the people, if I weren’t able to do that I would be holding my head down” Dhiyana said.

Saying that the people were fully aware why President Nasheed sacked her, she said the President is unable to ‘digest’ when she fulfills her duties and responsibilities as stipulated in the constitution. She further said the position of Attorney General can only be held by a puppet that would be happy to abide president’s orders.

Dhiyana is the wife of leading businessmen and Ga MP Abdulla Jabir. She was appointed to the position nearly six months ago on Jumhoory Party’s (JP) ticket, a party forming the ruling coalition government.

President Mohamed Nasheed sacked Civil Aviation and Communication Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel today for failing to make progress, according to the president’s office press secretary.

Mohamed Zuhair said the president had appointed Mahmoud Razee, the state minister for civil aviation and communication, as the minister’s replacement. The nomination will now need parliamentary approval.

“The president felt Razee was a better person,” said Zuhair. “He felt he needed a more qualified person in that subject, a technocrat so to speak. To move tasks forward a more technical person would be better. It’s a highly technical ministry.”

Jameel, of the Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), is the third member of the cabinet to go in less than seven months since the coalition government took office in November 2008. His replacement, Razee, is a member of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) which heads the government.

The dismissal comes two weeks after Attorney General Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed was fired following the publication of a series of letters, highly critical of Nasheed’s administration.

In one of her letters, Dhiyana, a member of the Republican Party, questioned the president’s failure to appoint a permanent home minister after the leader of her party, Gasim Ibrahim, quit the post in December 2008.

Zuhair said today the government had now submitted lawyer Husnu Suood’s name for attorney general and former parliamentary speaker Mohamed Shihab’s name for home minister to parliament.

On whether the government’s nominees would get approval from a parliament dominated by the opposition, Zuhair said all of the candidates were appropriate to the posts.

“We have proven quite effective in the past in the minority,” he said.

MALE, May 9, 2010 (HNS)  – President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday has dismissed Mohamed Rasheed of government coalition partner Qaumee Iththihad Party (QIP) from the post of Minister of Economic Development. The President’s Office cited Article 115(f) and 137(a) of the Constitution for the dismissal.

In a letter to Rasheed, President Nasheed expressed gratitude for services rendered during his tenure, President's Office website read.

Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair revealed the decision was linked to the “current political truths,” and that the President would be proposing a new nominee to the parliament for endorsement.

“Three aspects would be considered when submitting a new name to the parliament. They are the technical experience of the field, educational qualifications, ability to produce a [good] outcome and how much the nominee can assist the government in implementing its policies and fulfilling its electoral pledges,” he said.

Although he has not been informed of another change to the cabinet, changes would be observed in less senior positions of the government, Zuhair added.

Rasheed’s dismissal comes days after Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik of QIP publicly criticised the government and the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Rasheed told Haveeru the sacking was sudden, but added that President Nasheed called him Saturday evening and requested to “vacate the post.”

“I told him that I will consider his request. But I received the letter of termination this morning,” he said.

When asked whether his dismissal was linked to Vice President’s criticisms, he said he could not comment on it.

“I hope that the President would appoint a member of Qaumee Iththihad Party (QIP) to the post again, because the ministry has been handed over to Qaumee Iththihad Party,” he added.

Rasheed said he worked to modernise the functioning of the ministry and that his staff are witnesses to the outcomes.

Ahmed Inaz of QIP is currently the Deputy Minister of Economic Development.
